How are lab grown gems created?

MiaDonna offers the most technologically advanced lab-grown gemstones from Chatham. Chatham creates their high-quality gemstones using a single growing method called Flux Fusion. During the growing period (six months to a year) the chamber’s temperature and chemistry are carefully controlled to duplicate the environment in the area of the earth where that gemstone variety forms. Over time the crystal begins to grow on the ‘seed’ in its natural crystal shape. Since foreign materials found in the earth are eliminated from a starting ‘seed’, the crystal grows more predictably, which in turn consistently produces the best qualities and colors - even better than those found in nature. Once this process is finished, the outcome is a rough crystal identical to one found in nature which results in the highest quality lab grown gemstones available.

When I decided I wanted an engagement ring, I knew that I had to get something that aligned with my values of sustainability and ethics. I looked at every eco-friendly and ethical jewelry company I could find, but I kept coming back to MiaDonna because the jewelry is gorgeous and the lab-grown gems and recycled precious metals aligned with my beliefs.

Lab grown Sapphires

Sapphires

Sapphires are associated with blessings, divine knowledge, sincerity, and faithfulness. They are also the birthstone for September and the gem of the 5th and 45th anniversaries.

While all colors of Sapphire are beautiful, the most popular color, especially for engagement rings, is blue. Blue Sapphire is the most difficult gem crystal to grow. Color in Sapphire often follows the crystal structure in color zones. Even the best Sapphire crystal has different shades of blue in it. That’s why lab grown blue Sapphires come in three lovely shades of blue, not just one. The price difference between the finest lab-grown and mined Sapphire of the same size and quality can be as much as $10,000 USD per carat!

Padparadscha

The rarest color of Sapphire, Padparadscha is the September birthstone, and used as the 5th and 45th anniversary gem.

True Padparadscha Sapphires are very rare in nature - most jewelers have never even seen one! Growing Padparadscha Sapphire crystals takes a lengthy process of about six months. The result is a beautiful range of orange-pink to red-orange colors, sometimes referred to as “sunrise and sunset” colors.

Lab grown Rubies

Rubies

Rubies are associated with intense passion, good luck, protection from misfortune, and personal inspiration. Ruby is the birthstone for July and the gem for the 15th and 40th anniversaries.

Fine Rubies glow like coals, with red fluorescence making them particularly vivid in sunlight. Rubies are very rare: it’s almost impossible to mine flawless Rubies and many mined Rubies are enhanced with heat and fracture filling to improve their appearance. Natural Rubies can command the highest per-carat price of any colored stone. This makes the Ruby one of the most important gems in the colored stone market.

Emeralds

As the gem of spring, Emerald is the perfect choice as the birthstone for the month of May. It’s also the gem of the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.

Emeralds are fascinating gemstones made from a mineral called Beryl. They have the most beautiful and most intense radiant green color. It takes about a year from start to finish to grow an Emerald crystal: the crystals grow for about nine months. The controlled environment is rich in chromium to give the crystals a rich green hue, and allows them to grow larger and cleaner than the Emeralds grown in nature. Emeralds are at least twenty times more rare than diamonds, and in the finest grades they can sell for approximately the same per-carat price as earth-mined diamonds. Our lab grown Emeralds are identical to the finest grade earth-mined Emerald but are 3% the cost at only $395 USD per carat.

How are lab grown gems created

Ring shown: Rosemary Ring set with a round shaped Alexandrite.

Alexandrite

Alexandrite is a birthstone for June and is also the gem for the 45th and 55th wedding anniversary.

Alexandrite is the very rare color-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl and is often described as “emerald by day, ruby by night,” because it changes color from bluish-green in fluorescent light to brownish or purplish-red in incandescent light. Originally discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s, it’s now found in Sri Lanka, East Africa and Brazil, however, this fine gemstone is exceptionally rare and valuable, because it is no longer being mined.

The Alexandrites we grow are true laboratory-grown Alexandrite, the famous color-change chrysoberyl variety with the exact same properties as the mined gems. Some suppliers sell a chemically treated color-change synthetic Sapphire as “lab grown Alexandrite.” It isn’t Alexandrite and it doesn’t look at all like the real thing, due to the slight color change from blue to purple. If you see “Alexandrite” that doesn’t change from green to red, you’ll know that it is just an inexpensive imitation.

Pick your Alexandrite.

FAQ

What is the Flux Fusion growing method?

This is a longer, more involved process of growing gems, however it provides many advantages. The most important being an identical internal structure that gives each MiaDonna gemstone optimal brilliance and light return.

The less advanced, alternative growing process of Flame Fusion uses a melting method to achieve a stone that carries the same look as a Ruby and/or Sapphire. This is what you will find at most competitors because it's the most commonly used method due to the low investment (approximately 1 cent per carat) and the quick turnaround (approximately 1 hour), however the lack of internal crystal structure means it will not carry the same brilliance as a natural Ruby or Sapphire, and will return a negative result when tested.

Are these gemstones enhanced or color treated?

No. Because our gemstones are grown in an extremely controlled environment, we are able to grow vivid colored gems without the need to use enhancement or color treating.

How are Lab Grown Gemstones cut?

When it comes to cutting gemstones, we use strict standards for proportions, faceting and polish that ensures that all of our gemstones have maximum brilliance, high clarity, and vivid color. To meet these standards, 80% of the rough crystal is lost. Saving extra weight is never a consideration, ensuring you receive the most beautiful and highest quality lab-grown gemstones available.

Can I tell the difference between grown gemstones and mined gemstones?

No! Since lab grown gemstones are 100% identical to earth-mined gemstones, only trained gemologists using high powered equipment can tell the difference.

Are lab grown gemstones as durable as mined gemstones?

Yes. They have the exact same chemical make-up as mined gems so they have the same score on the Mohs scale. All gemstones, whether mined or grown, are not as hard as diamond and should be treated with extra care and attention. We recommend removing your gemstone jewelry when doing housework, yardward, exercising, etc.

Do lab grown gemstones come with a warranty?

For your peace of mind, we provide a lifetime guarantee on all of our grown gemstones, something not offered with traditional earth-mined gems. We will gladly repair or replace your stone should it chip or break under ordinary circumstances, or should any defect in the workmanship or materials become apparent*.

*Excludes labor. Normal wear and tear damage is not covered.
