Featured Couple - Meet Kara and John

Article by Adam

We’re delighted to share with you the story of a MiaDonna couple who recently celebrated their one year wedding anniversary. Get to know the lovely couple as told by Kara and John themselves!

On January 9, 2010 an air traffic controller and a teacher met on a plane. John and Kara had assigned seats next to each other and John asked Kara if she spoke Spanish -- while she was reading a magazine in Spanish. They talked and laughed from Honduras to Texas. Sparks flew, but Kara had another flight to catch. While they awkwardly said goodbye at her gate, a family nearby started talking about the two of them in Spanish, taking bets on if they were going to kiss or not. Their first kiss came two and a half years later when John emailed Kara out of the blue, and drove eight hours out of his way to take her out to dinner. It took a while for them to get together, but once they re-met that was it.

When they knew they wanted to get married and started talking about rings, Kara immediately thought of MiaDonna. A close friend had spoken so highly of them and Kara loved the idea of a beautiful, guaranteed conflict-free ring. They visited the Portland showroom and loved how helpful, friendly, and down-to-earth Linley Shepard was during the whole process. The exquisite ring they both loved turned out to have the same name as John’s late grandmother Betty, so they knew that was the one.

John told Kara he had a proposal plan, but it would be at least five months until it could happen. He had already fake proposed to her eight times before they picked out the ring together. And although they were all funny moments where he’d knelt down and then tied his shoe or pretended to pick something up off the floor, Kara was ready for the real thing and wanted to celebrate their commitment. Luckily, John had a surprise in the works. With the help of some of her close friends and family, he threw her a surprise 30th birthday party a few weeks later at a beautiful restaurant. While posing for a picture, John got down on one knee and popped the question - for real. They laughed, cried, and kissed. Then some onlookers yelled out “Is that a yes?!” It definitely was, and their adventures together continue!
